Night Flowering Jasmine (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) is the State flower of West Bengal also known as Shephali.
The flowers of Shephali are born with the tendency of growing in clusters of two to seven as well as opening at dusk and closing at dawn.
The flower of Shephali has its usage in commercial purpose as a natural resource of a yellow dye. Besides the dye, the leaves of Shephali have been an excellent agent for homeopathic and ayurvedic medicines.
The tree is sometimes called the "tree of sorrow", because the flowers lose their brightness during daytime; the scientific name arbor-tristis also means "sad tree".
The flowers can be used as a source of yellow dye for clothing. The flower is called Gangaseuli and some where Jharaa sephali in Odisha, India.
